Mayor Chiang Wan-an attended the group swear-in ceremony for new principals of local schools and kindergartens on August 1. Citing his recent visit to Singapore, the mayor hopes that the incoming heads of the educational institutions can learn from the city state’s capabilities in planning and execution. The city government also promises to stand firmly behind these educators to support their efforts.

The mayor pointed out that many of the attending principals are old friends. Of course, there are also young principals who take on the important responsibility. Education is a key to the city’s development and something that the city government regards as highly important. For its policies, the administration consults principals, teachers, and parents, hoping to develop an approach that is student-centric and merges aspects such as IT tools and AI to support teaching. In the future, the city government plans to promote bilingual education and emphasize collaboration between the academia and industries to boost students’ competitiveness.

According to the mayor, the city government wants to let students learn how to be their own masters. That is why the Department of Education highlighted the “Class and Recess Reversal” policy earlier this year to let children have a grasp on planning their own direction of learning, as well as encouraging local schools to link up with international trends. At the same time, the city also emphasizes preschool education, showing high expectations for public kindergartens and nurseries.

Citing his trip to Singapore, the mayor praised the city-state’s vision in education, which has a clear and firm direction. The Singaporean officials were very precise in answering the questions of Taipei’s delegation members. For example, regarding the sustainability goals of 2030, Singapore will add another 1 million trees, achieve carbon neutrality for 20% of its schools, and have 75% of commuters take public transportation during peak hours.

Addressing the new principals, Chiang stressed that their efforts will play key roles in determining the future development of Taipei City, as well as nurturing potential talents for the country’s future. Looking at 10, 20, or even 30 years down the road, the fruits of today’s investment in education will become evident. He hopes the nation’s education can continue to move forward under a clear vision and direction – like those of Singapore’s. He promises to invest efforts on the part of city government to support the principals, providing them with solid backing as they work on enhancing the education system.
