Mayor Chang Wan-an attended the reopening ceremony of the Metropolitan Hall on July 19. The event also commemorates the 40^th anniversary of the facility. 

Since its opening in 1983, the Metropolitan Hall has served as an important venue for numerous performances in Taipei. To strengthen the safety for both event attendees and performers and to upgrade building infrastructure, the facility has been closed for refurbishment since the end of 2021. 

During his speech, the mayor pointed out that the institution brings back fond memories for generations of performers and spectators. From its humble beginning as Taipei Cultural Center, the Metropolitan Hall served as an important performance venue – second only to the National Theater and Concert Hall. It even reported box office sales reaching NT$18 million in 2003.

However, continued use over the years have accelerated natural wear and tear. That is why a major overhaul has been carried out to ensure the safety of building structure and the quality of the venue. He expressed his gratitude to all the people who have worked on the project, making it possible to reopen on schedule despite challenges such as construction material shortages during the pandemic. 

The mayor cited improvements such as new automated stage control system, audio system, and air conditioning system. The renovation also addressed issues such as building leakage. To better accommodates the needs of performers, backstage areas such as dressing rooms and rehearsal spaces have been redesigned. For the audience, a more spacious seating area and outdoor greens will make their event attendee experience more enjoyable. Finally, the overhaul of stage lighting will enhance the overall illumination of the performance area. 

To celebrate the 40^th anniversary of Metropolitan Hall, the city government has organized a number of free performances for youths between 18 and 21. The campaign seeks to bring the younger generations closer to performing arts and provide performers with more opportunities to showcase their talents.
