On July 27, Mayor Chiang Wan-an presided over the plaque-unveiling ceremony for the Taipei City Government Employee Nursery Center. He announced that city hall’s first government-sponsored, private-operated childcare facility is now open for business. Unlike its predecessor, the revamped institution has been expanded and able to accept more children.

The mayor noted that as the father of three, he fully understands parents’ needs. Whether childcare or nursery, he hopes that the government can take the initiative in providing a comprehensive childcare environment. This will also encourage private sector companies to follow the steps and create childcare-friendly workplace environment for their employees.

He mentioned that the overhauled facility now has an opening for 32 toddlers, compared to 12 for the former facility. Kids can accompany their parents to city hall and receive care and education, allowing them to grow up happily and their parents to concentrate on their work.

Chiang mentioned that during the graduation ceremony of a kindergarten class a while back, one of the parents mentioned to him that they can only send one kid to the kindergarten at city hall but have another newborn attend a nursery near home. They suggested that the childcare facility should expand and accept more kids of different age. Today, with the opening of the renewed center, it is now able to take care of kids ranging from newborn to six-year-old preschoolers.

At the end of his speech, the mayor expressed his gratitude to all the staff that made the project possible, including members from the Department of Personnel, Department of Social Affairs, and Construction Management Office, as well as the teachers and childcare workers. With subsidies from both city hall and the central government, the expense for the quality childcare is only NT$3,000. Hopefully, this will relieve employees’ pressure in childcare and allow the kids to grow up in a carefree environment.
