Mayor Chiang Wan-an and a delegation from Taipei City Government departed for Shanghai to attend the Taipei-Shanghai City Forum on August 29. The delegation was received by Shanghai’s Deputy Mayor Hua Yuan at the airport.

The first stop of the delegation is at the Yangshan Deep-water Port, and the visitors were accompanied by Chairman Gu of Shanghai International Port Group for a tour of the facility. While the deep-water port is part of Shanghai Port, it handles over 40% of Shanghai Port’s cargo throughput and plays a key role in securing Shanghai’s position as a major international shipping center.

With development spread out across four stages, the fourth phase section of the port began operations on December 10, 2017. It is currently the world’s largest smart port with automated container port area. The loading, unloading, and transport of freights at the facility adopt the locally-developed Intelligent Terminal Operation System (ITOS).

In 2022, Shanghai Port handled a volume of roughly 47.3 million standard-sized containers, making it the world’s busiest port for 13 consecutive years. In addition, Yangshan Deep-water Port is also a green and environmental-friendly port. All facilities at the port are powered by electricity.

Chiang pointed out that Taiwanese companies also play an important role in the field of global sea freight. The firms Evergreen Marine, Yang Ming Marine Transport, and Wan Hai Lines account for 10% of Yangshan Port’s sea freights. He added that the roots of Yang Ming Marine Transport can be traced back to Qing Dynasty’s China Merchants Steam Navigation Company. The mayor also mentioned that the Port of Kaohsiung has also taken steps towards automation.

The mayor remarked that while there is no port facility under Taipei City’s jurisdiction, Yangshan Port’s operation model combining smart technology and low carbon emission is an approach that fits well with Taipei’s belief highlighting sustainability. One of the objectives of Taipei’s delegation is to learn how to integrate smart automated operation process and modes into major constructions, enabling the city to meet environmental protection and zero carbon emission requirements.
