On July 25, Mayor Chiang Wan-an and city officials met with Representative Lkhagvasuren Zolzaya and Deputy Representative Altandush Ulziibat from Ulaanbaatar Trade and Economic Representative Office in Taipei at city hall. The two sides exchanged views on topic ranging from sister city relations to city administration.

Mayor Chiang pointed out that this year marks the 26th anniversary of sister city relationship between Taipei and Ulaanbaatar, as well as the 20th anniversary for the founding of the Ulaanbaatar Trade and Economic Representative Office in Taipei.

On the topic of sustainability, the mayor remarked that Mongolia published the Vision-2050 papers and is one of the first countries to support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a city promoting zero carbon-emission and sustainable development, Taipei City believes that the two sides can learn from each other’s experience. He also took the opportunity to invite Mongolia to attend the 2024 Taipei Smart Summit and Expo and the 2025 Summer World Masters Games.

Representative Zolzaya expressed his gratitude to the mayor for the opportunity to meet in person. He added that this year marks the 21st anniversary of the establishment of Taiwan’s representative office in Mongolia and looks forward to strengthening exchange and cooperation. He mentioned that 2023 through 2025 will be Mongolia’s “Years to Visit Mongolia,” and Taiwanese visitors will be able to enter the country via the electronic visa system. According to Zolzaya, roughly 5,000 visitors from Taiwan traveled to Mongolia in 2019. In 2023, about 2,000 travelers from Taiwan have visited the country so far.

As over half of the nation’s population live around the capital city, Ulaanbaatar has been facing challenges such as air pollution, traffic congestions, and floods. This is why Representative Zolzaya is impressed with Taipei’s ability to avert flooding despite enduring 15 days of consecutive rain last year and wishes to learn from Taipei’s experiences.

At the end of the meeting, Mayor Chiang presented an Iron Goddess Tea gift set and a portable fan to Mongolian diplomat, who returned the favor with a calligraphy artwork with the words “Taipei” written in Mongolian.
