On July 10, Mayor Chiang Wan-an hosted a banquet for Mayor Kate Gallego and members of the delegation from Phoenix, Arizona. 

City officials attending the banquet include Research, Development, and Evaluation Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of International Committee Yu Chen-hua, City Spokesperson Yin Wei, Education Commissioner Tang Chih-min, Economic Development Commissioner Chen Chun-an, Cultural Affairs Commissioner Tsai Shih-ping, and Fire Department Commissioner Mo Huai-chu. 

During his address, Chiang noted that Mayor Gallego is the youngest and the second woman to take the elected position in Phoenix. Both Chiang and Gallego are leaders of major cities and graduates of the University of Pennsylvania. Sharing many common traits, Chiang is both happy and honored to welcome Mayor Gallego and the delegation from Phoenix in an era where travel restrictions have been lifted after the pandemic.

According to Chiang, Taipei City and Phoenix have maintained close relationships as sister cities and continue to collaborate in areas such as education, disaster prevention, arts, and economy. He cited examples such as the STEAM program for middle school and high school, international youth ambassador exchange, experience-sharing in disaster prevention policies, disabled artists creative project competition, and Taipei Culture Camp. 

Mayor Gallego expressed her gratitude to Mayor Chiang and his team for organizing the banquet. She is delighted to learn that Taipei’s mayor is also an alumnus of University of Pennsylvania and looks forward to taking a photo with him later. She mentioned that this is her second visit to Taiwan, following her first trip in 2019. The delegation visited destinations including Taipei 101, Dadaocheng, National Palace Museum, and Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. They also have the opportunity to visit TSMC and looks forward to see the company set up shop in Phoenix. 

She remarked that the delegation also stopped by local businesses working in the domain of climate change for the first time. Hopefully, there will be more collaborations between the two cities, especially in area of climate change and the field of cuisine, so residents of Phoenix will have a chance to try out some of Taipei’s fine delicacies.
