On June 27, Mayor Chiang Wan-an attended the “Pregnancy 2U, Gift 4U, and 24-hour Service” press conference at city hall. Carrying his youngest son on a baby sling, he announced that Taipei’s maternity taxies will begin serving the public starting July 1.

As a father of three kids, Chiang recalled how he accompanied his wife throughout the stages of pregnancy – from early hospital checkups to looking after the newborn. He understands the challenges every mom must face, and that is why he seeks to transform Taipei City into a livable, sustainable, and considerate city. One of his focuses is upon how to make mothers more confident, feel more at ease, and be more willing to have kids. One of his answers is the maternity taxi service.

The mayor pointed out that the maternity taxi offers several advantages. The service itself sets a new record for offering the highest amount of cab allowance for pregnant women in the country – NT$8,000. Also, expecting moms will be able to access the service over a long period – from the day when pregnancy is confirmed to six-month after delivery. 

The application process is also very convenient, as moms can choose whether to visit the 12 district offices, social welfare centers, district health centers, or apply via the online platform. In addition, the city government also partners with selected hospitals and clinics to allow moms to apply directly after confirmation of pregnancy during checkup. 

Furthermore, the TaipeiPass app is also a very useful tool that enables online reservation and payment. For those who hire an affiliated taxi on the roadside, they can scan the QR Code of partner taxi fleets to access the service. For those utilizing the online payment function, the maximum charge per trip is capped at NT$250.  

The mayor also expressed his gratitude to partner taxi companies for willing to work with the city to provide expecting moms a comfortable, non-smoking cabs. He also thanked city agencies for helping to realize the service, including the Department of Civil Affairs, Department of Information Technology, Department of Health, Department of Transportation, and Public Transportation Office.
