On June 10, Mayor Chiang Wan-an attended the Dragon Boat Eye-dotting Ceremony at both Shuangxi Wharf and Quyuan Temple. The event symbolizes the start of the 2023 Taipei International Dragon Boat Festival and Championships.  

During his address, the mayor pointed out that after 3 years of pause, the Taipei International Dragon Boat Championships will finally resume this year at Taipei’s riverside park. With over 5,100 athletes from 210 teams taking part in the upcoming event, he believes that the tournament would be a spectacular competition – especially with total prize award reaching NT$3.1 million. 

Chiang expressed his gratitude to Chairman Lin Tian-lai of Quyuan Temple for his full-hearted support of the sports tournament every year. Through organizing the eye-dotting ceremony for dragon boats, the temple passes down an important tradition and preserves it for future generation. The mayor also thanked Commissioner Wu Sheng-chung of the Department of Environmental Protection for helping the temple install solar panels and promote the policy of a low-carbon and sustainable city. 

The mayor remarked that there are many athletes who began practicing early in the morning and continue training at home. Noting such devotion, he believes that they will achieve outstanding results in this year’s competition. He recalled that his wife formed a team with a group of friends back in 2019, and he watched the race from the shore with his eldest son. This year, he is very excited for finally having the chance to enjoy the event as a member of a dragon boat team.

At the end of his speech, Chiang gave a shout-out to local legislators, borough chiefs, and frontline staff for helping to realize the event. He hopes that this year’s Taipei International Dragon Boat Festival and Championships will be a success, and all the athletes can perform their best at the tournament.
