Observing a shift in the storm’s direction towards Taiwan’s northeastern waters, the Central Weather Bureau has issued sea warning for Typhoon Khanun at 8:30 PM on August 1. With spring tides also slated to take place this weekend, the Fire Department warns owners of vehicles parked at riverside parking lots along the downstream of Keelung River, Bailing Riverside Park, and the banks of Tamsui River to take special heed of floodgate closure notices.

The typhoon is expected to affect Taipei City between the evening of August 2 and the daytime of August 4. There may be strong gale in the flatland, while the winds in mountainous areas may reach violent storm level. The public should carry out typhoon preparations and avoid leaving home during storms or visiting mountainous areas, riverbanks, and seaside.

The Fire Department encourages residents to keep track of the latest weather developments, updates on potential flooding, and evacuation notices. Some of the safety tips provided by the Fire Department include:

-For emergencies during typhoon, call either 1999, 119, or 110

-Refrain from leaving one’s home to minimize the chance of getting hit by loose objects; avoid using candles during blackouts, and adopt relevant precautions if you must light one

-If you notice clogged gutters or fallen trees, call 1999

-Those living in low elevation areas, near slopes, or next to the river should take necessary precautions and be ready to evacuate on a short notice

-Prepare items such as radio, flashlight, first aid kit, drinking water, food, and other necessities.

-Inspect fences, support beams, sign boards, and billboards and strengthen them against strong winds

-Follow the instructions of city staff when you receive an evacuation order

-Do not touch loose power lines and call 119, 110, or 1999 to notify the power company

-Prepare your personal evacuation backpack, which should contain the follows: bottled water; biscuits and rations; copy of ID; some cash; medication; thick work gloves; flashlight; radio; batteries; heavy clothing; small blanket; light raincoat; hand warmers; tissue paper; towel; pen and paper; duplicate keys, and swiss knife. The bag should be placed somewhere easily accessible.
