TSHI Students Celebrate Dragon Boat Festival by Wrapping Zongzi for Charity
The charity zongzi-wrapping event took place at the school on June 14. The session is organized by the Taipei Association of High School and Vocation School PTA Presidents (TAPAS) under the joint supervision of the Department of Social Welfare and Department of Education. In addition to the students and faculty of TSHI and members of TAPAS, dignitaries attending the zongzi-wrapping session include Taipei City Councilor Wu Shih-cheng; Taipei City Councilor Huang Ching-yin, City Government Consultant Hsu Hsiao-ren, and City Government Consultant Chang Wen-chuan. During the class, the students learned about how to wrap northern-style zongzi, put together scented sachets, and learn about the properties of numerous Chinese herbs used for sachet components. One of the students surnamed Huang remarked that hopefully the zongzi he wrapped will raise money for the school’s scholarship. Another student surnamed Chen looks forward to the proceeds from sales helping students from low income and disadvantaged families TAPAS Chairperson Lin Chia-hui remarked that this is the first time for the association to collaborate with TSHI. With the help of teachers from the Dining and Beverage Department and the use of school facility, the members of the association are able to join students in wrapping zongzis. The finished products are either sold via preorder or presented as gifts to disadvantaged groups. The proceeds are donated to the school, in accordance with the association’s principle of taking up social responsibility, encouraging the healthy development of students, and looking after the welfare of disadvantaged students.
The students of Taipei School for the Hearing Impaired (TSHI) is celebrating the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival by making zongzi (sticky rice dumpling) and selling them for charity. The proceeds will go to supporting disadvantaged groups and create an environment highlighting friendship and the spirit of giving.
