At the invitation of the ROC Central Military Institute and Academy Alumni Association (CMIAAA), Mayor Chiang Wan-an attended the opening ceremony and press conference for the Whampoa Military Academy and Army Foundation Centennial Exhibition at city hall’s center court on June 18.

During his speech, the mayor pointed out that next year will be the centennial of the military academy’s founding, and that the CMIAAA will hold a series of activity to commemorate the contributions and sacrifice of forefathers who help to defend the country. 

He remarked that the Whampoa Military Academy was founded according to the instructions from the nation’s founding father Sun Yat-sen, with the leader of the Chinese Nationalist Party Chiang Kai-shek serving as the school’s first superintendent. 

The mayor expressed his gratitude to all the predecessors who protected the country during wartime and remain vigilant in serving the society during times of peace. The spirit of the academy encompasses “sacrifice, united, and responsibility.” He hopes that the doctrine can be passed down to future generations who continue to love the Republic of China, in memory of the sacrifice and contributions of ancestors who gave their life to serve the nation.

The mayor stressed that as the head of Taipei City, he will continue to uphold these values to serve citizens and work for the betterment of the municipality.

The centennial exhibition features many photos and relics across various periods, such as the four major relocation of the academy from its original site to Nanjing, Chengdu and finally to Fengshan. It also contains memorabilia from the Second Sino-Japanese War, calligraphy works by historical figures, and a collection of historical photos following the school’s reestablishment in Fengshan.
