Mayor Meets Haitian Ambassador, Discusses Global Challenges
The mayor pointed out that Haiti has been Taiwan’s staunch partner over the years. Since the establishment of official ties in 1956, the two countries have enjoyed a close relationship. He also expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Penn for participating in a number of events organized by city hall. He is also very thankful that the ambassador attended his mayoral inauguration last year and hopes that he will continue to support city-sponsored events in the future. Ambassador Penn thanked Mayor Chiang for arranging the meeting. He reaffirmed the friendship between the Caribbean nation and Taiwan, as well as the values shared between the two countries including democracy, people’s unity, and freedom. He is honored to serve as the bridge between Haiti and Taiwan, and hopes that today’s visit will establish additional communication channels with city hall. The Haitian ambassador was born in the capital city of Port-au-Prince in 1983. Mayor Chiang remarked that it is a rare opportunity to meet an ambassador who is younger than him. He is very impressed with the ambassador’s longtime efforts in domains such as youth affairs and civic participation. Responding to Penn’s inquiries about the opportunities for Haitians in terms of investing and starting careers in Taipei, the Deputy Commissioner of Economic Development Wu Hsin-pei pointed out that information on incentives and business opportunities can be acquired through the Invest Taipei Office. As for cultural exchanges, Senior Specialist Lee Ping-chen from the Department of Cultural Affairs noted that the agency will be more than happy to assist the Haitian embassy in organizing related events and activities.
Mayor Chiang Wan-an met with Ambassador Roudy Stanley Penn and the delegation from the embassy of the Republic of Haiti on July 18. The two young leaders discussed a wide range of topics spanning city administration to future collaborations.
