Fiber To The Home (FTTH)

Fiber-optic network lays the foundation for the construction of an intelligent city. It also serves as an index of competitiveness for a modern international metropolis. Governments have been eager to implement high-speed wireless broadband network infrastructure and promote related applications. Fiber-optic cables boast advantages such as high speed, high bandwidth, great volumes of data processing, long distance of data transmission, thin wire diameter, lightness, anti-electromagnetic interference, and greater security. Given these advantages, optical fiber has been widely used for implementing internet networks in advanced countries.
The implementation of the FTTH project involves no government funding. The tender for FTTH project had been conducted in accordance with Article 99 of Government Procurement Act (open for private investment) and concluded in December, 2011. The commissioned contractor, Taiwan Intelligent Fiber Optic Network Consortium (Taifo), is responsible for the construction of needed infrastructure and operation of the project. The company also assumes the responsibility for any profits or losses. After the contract expires in 25 years, entitlements to the fiber-optic network will be returned to Taipei City Government.
The implementation of FTTH will have a great impact on the future development of Taipei by helping the city sharpen its competitive edge, enhancing the quality of digital life for residents, and playing a key role in nourishing industries. The planned 8,000-km long fiber-optic network will be deployed across the city’s 12 administrative districts to reach a household penetration rate of 80%. FTTH has been listed as a priority on the City’s administrative agenda, as well as being included as one of the Ten Major Projects of Taipei. The capital aims to become the island’s leading intelligent city boasting a comprehensive optical fiber network. With the optical fiber cables in place, Taipei will be able to provide residents with low-cost, high-speed internet access. Through the project, it seeks to create a fair competitive environment for telecommunications industry, strengthen information infrastructure, increase city competitiveness, and foster the growth of cloud industries, digital content industry, as well as the development of video game software and IPTV.
